I have finally watched the newest Star Trek movie and I only have one question for the Star Trek fans that seem to hate it.
Why? Why do you hate it?
Believe me, I'm a fan of the old Star Trek, I grew up watching it. If this new version was a remake of the old TV series and movies, I could understand the uproar about fans not liking it, but it's not a remake. It's not until close to the end that you find out, but this Star Trek is set in a new altered time-line from the original series and movies.
I find the new take on Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura and the rest of the Enterprise crew refreshing and, to use the old Spock's favorite word, fascinating. Kirk born just seconds before his father, George, dies saving his crew and wife, Spock fighting as a child and, later on, having feelings for Uhura, Chekov being 17 and a genius, Sulu actually making a mixstake piloting the Enterprise for the first time...The list goes on. And having the young Spock meet his future self, from the other time-line no less, was a great way to possibly begin a new Star Trek universe.
I, along with a great many other fans, old and new alike, would love to see a new TV series about this Star Trek, or at least a series of movies. Think of the many different adventures this Enterprise crew could have. Think of how some adventures from the old Star Trek could be revamped, done differently perhaps even. The possiblities are endless for this new Star Trek.
I, personally, rate this Star Trek as a 10.

I'm a Trekkie, and I loved it--and I was never a true fan of the original Star Trek--I mean, I liked it, but there was too much romance with Shatner all the time, so to me, that was a huge turn-off. The new movie brings the characters to life; it was awesome without being cheesy, it was cool without bordering on self-indulgence, it was just what was needed to tie the old with the new, and bring on some new fans. And it gives background on Capt. Kirk and the issues that shaped his life. That was very cool.
But, I honestly believe that the older fans are pretty hard-core, so it's difficult for them to accept that the franchise needed any retooling. But it did. And this movie did wonders to bring aboard new fans. I liked it, and totally behind Mr. Abrams on a job that was quite well done.

I wasn't gonna give any more spoilers. :-P But, yeah, I always thought Uhura and Spock would work.

Figures LevinFan would hate this too.
I loved this movie... can't wait for the DVD.... and more of the movies...Everything changed ... so they can do what ever with this.
Warning..Spoilers!!!!!
90210???? are you kidding me??? Seeing Scotty and Bones ...younger was just cool. I don't remember Bones being divorced.. I wonder if that has to do with all the changes that took place at the time of Kirk's birth.
Vaulcan is gone, Spock's momma.... OMG!!!!

Since it's out...
Yeah, that was another of the "this is someplace ELSE, nobody is safe" moments. Very Joss Whedon, take a character folks are bound to be fond of, and say, "dead... who do you think is next?"
I'm with you LarryK Dagger! I rate this movie a 10! I'm a Trekkie from the original series and this movie reminded me of the original James T. Kirk and the rest of the crew! I didn't see new faces but the old faces! If it hadn't been for my son who treated me to the movie, I wouldn't have gone to see it and I would have missed out on an adventure. I haven't met a Tekkie yet who didn't like the movie.

I grew up with the original Star Trek. Heck, I've got a "Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" signed by James Doohan. (They got him to sing at that con, in Gaelic, it was beautiful.)
I loved the new movie. Take it for what it is, an alternate timeline, which split well before the beginning of the movie's events. (In the original, "core" universe, nobody knew what Romunans looked like until Kirk and the Enterprise crew encountered them, remember?) I like the new take on the originals, and hope they do more.

I am also a fan of the old Star Trek but I am a fan of the new one also. I think they did a fantastic job of making it new and making it their own.

I haven't seen it yet. Can't wait! I'm a Trekkie for sure ... have been for years. Are the Borg in this new one at all? Just wondering ....

Nobody answer that question. :-P Spoilers are evil. Go watch it.

Awwwww come on "guys" ... just a little spoiler ... please?

Okay... just a little one.
Kirk's in it, and is hotter than Shatner-Kirk. ;D

MoonCrow SAID a little one...
Okay, okay, real spoiler... and I can give it 'cause I figured it out on my own, it wasn't really stated. I mentioned earlier that the split between the "core" Trekverse and the new one was earlier than the beginning of the movie, because they recognized the Romulans. There are a few other bits and pieces that point to this being true, as well.
Tribbles were unheard of by Starfleet until Harry Mudd brought 'em on board the Enterprise... Yet, Scotty had one in a cage when he and Kirk first met.
Watch for details. :D

Just 'cause you begged. :D No more, go watch, come back, and rave.

WHAT??? I've seen it twice (yeah, I loved it) but I must have missed that. Too focused on the wierd short thing, whatever it was.

he is no Hugh Jackman falling from a waterfall butt nakid.... but he'll do in a pinch ;}

Well, who else IS Hugh Jackman falling from a waterfall? (If you find out you'd BETTER post to the Hugh Jackman Fans group!) Besides, it really doesn't take much to be hotter than Shatner...
Honestly, of the new crew, none of them were truly drool-worthy.

I think some people might not like it because it makes everything except for "Enterprise" from this point on irrelevant.

Not at all, Liam... Alternate timeline. The original 'verse still exists, and they can go on with it, unaffected by anything that happens in THIS line.

O boy the possibilities will never end. If the Borg queen wouldn't have died in "First Contact" we may have been able to see the off spring between her and Data or Captain Picard.

I actually didn't quite hate it, but I think I can tell you succinctly why a lot of people didn't.
Star Trek was revoloutionary in that it was a series which was intended to make you think. It was in that sense, real science fiction in a way that most of the hollywood movies are not. It was probably the first pop culture series to bring up the idea that interfering in other civilizations was such a complicated affair, it would likely backfire.
It wasn't always great, but for its time it was exceptional. And all that thought, the plotting, was lost in this movie.
It's not science fiction. It is space opera.

I disagree. I think the movie dealt with loss, and how people react to it. Kirk was even more reckless without his father figure, and he latched onto Pike as a result. (And fortunately, Chris Pine didn't do the trademark Shatner overkill.) Nero wanted to wipe out everybody, and Spock the younger became somewhat irrational. I love that line, "not really." Those who've seen it know of what I speak. And McCoy dealt with the loss of his marriage by joining Star Fleet, when he hated to fly! Yes, Karl Urban was GREAT, definitely my fave character! So used to seeing him as the uber-macho guy in "Riddick," "Born Supremacy," "Doom," etc. but he pulled it off well! Well, that's my two cents worth, hopefully not too many spoilers there.

I think just seeing the contrast to the old characters was great...
Crap, how to do this without spoiling... The villian was, also, reacting to loss. Badly, yes, but reacting to loss.

Oh, Rainkiss, you spoilin' spoilin' girl!! But you got a point there with the villain...

And what does that have to do with science fiction? The stuff you described is in fact a part of opera.

The stuff you described is in fact a part of opera.
And that's what Star Trek (TOS) was... a great Space Opera/Space Western/Soap in the Stars! at least it wasn't a Spaghetti Western in Space, LOL.
Timeline-wise... I think that this may have been influenced some by events from the Enterprise series changing events in time (how would the death of Kirk's father have effected Spock?)

No it really wasn't, it was more then that... I'm guessing this forum is frequented more by people who saw the later series then the original.
When they went out and did episodes on different cultures, they brought up a lot of stuff that actually involved some intellectual thought. Shallow by this time period, but in its day it was more sci fi then anything else on television.
Now, it's just the same sort of fluff as everything else Hollywood puts out.

I loved this it!! I wanna see it again...just haven't found the time....

No way am I going to spoil it for anyone. I loved it and see more coming with this crew as they set out on their adventure. I was in the last row in the movie at the end all right hands went up with the Vuclan Salute.

The new Star Trek movie was the best in years.
More importantly it revitalized a stale and dying series while maintaining true to form.
Trek fans are simply too obsessed with linking every bit of Trek since the beginning into one continuous time line and that, IMO is what killed the franchise. The new movie erases the time line in a brilliant way. Leading towards a future which is familiar yet full of new possibilities.

I finally got to see it, and I absolutely loved it. I have been a Star Trek fan ... all editions.
My only criticism is minor and it is that one of the actors did over-act a tad in a couple of scenes, but this is usually overcome by experience, and I bet he doesn't do it in the next film.
Chekov actually has way more personality than the original character did and he almost stole the supporting-cast show.
All in all, I'd give it a 10.
